General description

Fibroblast Growth Factor 9 is a mesenchymally expressed growth factor that regulates chondrogenesis, lung development, and male germ cell survival. It plays essential roles in skeletal patterning, alveolar formation, and spermatogenesis through distinct receptor specificities. Recombinant Human FGF-9 Protein (Y01001) is expressed from mammalian cells. It contains AA Pro 3 - Ser 208 (Accession # P31371), and is widely used in advanced cell culture, developmental biology, and reproductive biology research.

Fibroblast Growth Factor 9, also known as FGF-9 or GAF, is a member of the FGF family that signals primarily through FGFR2 and FGFR3 receptor isoforms. Unlike most FGFs, FGF-9 exhibits high-affinity binding to both FGFR2IIIb and FGFR2IIIc isoforms, as well as FGFR3IIIc, creating unique signaling capabilities that distinguish it from other family members. During embryonic development, FGF-9 is expressed in the mesenchyme of developing limbs, lungs, and testes, where it regulates chondrogenesis, branching morphogenesis, and germ cell survival through paracrine signaling to adjacent epithelial compartments. In the lung, FGF-9 is essential for mesenchymal proliferation and alveolar septation, with genetic deletion causing severe pulmonary hypoplasia. In the testis, FGF-9 maintains spermatogonial stem cells and promotes Sertoli cell proliferation, making it critical for male fertility. In skeletal biology, FGF-9 stimulates chondrocyte proliferation and matrix synthesis while inhibiting hypertrophic differentiation, suggesting therapeutic potential for cartilage repair in osteoarthritis.
